What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is bee’s wax combined with color pigment. The colored wax will be heated on a hot box in order to do a series of beautiful mono-prints. The mono-prints will be utilized to mount on panels and finished in wax medium.

What you can expect

Students will carve into and paint on the wax medium to complete their pieces, incorporating photo transfers into the surface. They will work with cold wax and oil paint on both oil paper and Yupo paper. All of the beautiful techniques of cold wax will be demonstrated and practiced, with an emphasis on texture and color mixing. Cold wax will also be layered over acrylic and ink underlayers.

Included in the workshop:

2 wooden panels, oil paper, yupo paper, mulberry paper, rice paper, oil paints, oil sticks, encaustic wax, cold wax, acrylic, and drawing materials.

In this workshop students will:

  • create 2 finished panels with mounted prints and encaustic medium.

  • create an entire series of monoprints using hot wax

  • Work with layers of wax, and use a variety of tools to create different wax effects

  • Use transfer and printmaking techniques for image development.

  • Use watercolor inks as a resist for the hot wax.

  • Create a series of experimental pieces with cold wax and oil paint.
