Health and Safety For Ecaustic and acrylic painting

The ArtWay studio is the only studio in Vancouver that offers specialized art instruction on encaustic mono-type print-making and encaustic painting.

Your health and safety is our first priority at the ArtWay. Therefore, we have put together a list of encaustic safety guidelines.

Encaustic Facts:

In the studio we use top quality pharmaceutical grade white beeswax.

Beeswax melts at 145F, with damar resin added, 155F. Maximum work temp for wax is 220F. Beeswax combusts at 468F. Prepared encaustic is safe to hold in your hands; gloves are not necessary. If wax goes over 250F, it smokes and is very toxic. Therefore, it is very important that the temperature of the wax does not exceed 200F as to ensure maximum safety for everyone in the studio.

Ventilation:

The studio is equipped with an HVAC ventilation system witch circulates the air at all times. The front and back door are often open to add extra air circulation. We also have 2 fans set up to take air away from working areas. Fresh air in the studio is of top priority.

Equipment

THE HOTBOX: The surface of the hotbox rarely reaches 220F, whereas griddles can reach dangerous wax temperatures. Keep an temperature gauge on the box, optimal working temperature is 150F to 175F.

Make sure to turn of the box and clean surface when finished.

Heat gun: to be used for fusing the wax, temperatures do not exceed 220 with the heat gun, torches are not recommended, and are not allowed in the studio, as they can exceed 220F. Metal tip of the heat gun is very hot, please use with caution.

In the studio we use water-based paints, such as watercolor and acrylic paints. These products are perfectly safe, and the added air circulation can set you mind at ease.

After you sign up and during your classes, I am always reviewing and monitoring safety in the studio.

Studio Code of Conduct

It is the goal of The ArtWay for everyone in the studio to feel comfortable and welcome. The ArtWay strives to make everyone who walks through our doors to feel at home. The teachers always treat their students with respect and compassion.

We have a zero tolerance policy for rude, disrespectful, racist, and aggressive behaviour in the studio. Any student who is in violation of this code of conduct will be asked to leave the course with no refund. It is up to the student to act accordingly while at The ArtWay.
